As an actor, it's the dream and desire of something potentially quite big happening to me. It's exciting not knowing what the next outcome will be. For most actors it's a very hard lifestyle but that's what excites me. It's what drives me forward to be a successful actor.
Now with hindsight and experience I can see that until I was able to face the experiences and resentments of the past there was certainly never going to be any solid future, and no possible way of doing the one thing which all actors crave and that is to BE present.
In Zen we have a principle that Dogen Zenji summarised as "To study the Buddha Way is to study the self. To study the self is to forget the self. To forget the self is to be actualized by myriad things." If we can start to truly face ourselves we become more permeable to life.
The creative soul is a spontaneous, wild creature, we do not discover it, we reveal it, and to do that we have to create the perfect conditions, so that it can be enticed up ‘like a jewel from the bottom of the ocean.’ It sounds fancy, but all it means is, we do not follow trends, we follow intuition, it always leads us to the perfect place to produce art.
Don’t listen to too much advice. Don’t wait. Just go out and make something. Make your own mistakes. Any advice you do hear will make a lot more sense after that. Beforehand, you probably won’t listen anyway, and if you do it may just restrict you. Having said that, I’d say make sure your script is as good as it can be before you shoot. Work with people who are really good at what they do. Stick to your vision but be prepared to adapt. Learn from your mistakes. Be brave.
